moving to raleigh nc

We love our home. And we’re guessing, that since you’re reading this, you have an inkling that you’ll love our home, too.

Sometimes, you get that itch and know it’s time for a new adventure. We’re here to tell you that if you’re looking for that perfect (new) place to call home, Raleigh, North Carolina should be at the very top of that list. But don’t take our word for it – we’ve compiled a list of the 12 most compelling reasons moving to Raleigh, NC may be the best decision you’ll ever make!

Read on (and maybe have some moving companies’ phone numbers nearby).

1. The Raleigh job market is loaded with opportunities

In July, Raleigh was ranked third among best midsize metros for job seekers by the American Institute for Economic Research. In today’s climate, it can be hard to find a new city that’s conducive to a job hunt. But Raleigh is just that kind of place.

Our top industries are professional and tech services, health care, and wholesale trade. Plus, the number of nearby universities offer a boost to an already robust job market. So if you’re seeking – you may have found the place.

2. More parks than you’ll know to do with

Did you know that the founding fathers of Raleigh called it the “City of Oaks” and were dedicated to maintaining the area’s parks? Today, it shows – Raleigh has over 9,000 acres of parklands and 1,300 acres of water!

There’s a greenway system that connects many of the city’s different parks through running or hiking trails. It spans 152 miles! And there are many other small parks to find that are perfect ways to while away an afternoon – like Midtown Park, right near us in North Hills.

3. You can’t beat the southern comfort food scene

We know we don’t have to sell you on Southern food. If you’ve ever tasted some good homemade BBQ, you know what we’re talking about. But Raleigh’s dessert scene is equally impressive.

Where else can you find from-scratch caramel cake? That’s what we thought. We’re known to duck into Edible Art (running since 1982) to fix our sweet tooth. Lucettegrace is a totally indulgent French bakery, turning out the best pastries this side of Paris. And Bittersweet is one of the coolest cocktail bars in town, where you can get dangerously good drinks – and desserts.

4. Your health and fitness levels will go way up

Don’t worry about all that dessert you’re going to be eating. Men’s Health ranked Raleigh number one among best cities for men who want to be “fit and happy” in January.

Part of it has to do with those parks we mentioned before – there’s ample opportunity to get outside and stay fit! Plus, Raleigh is uniquely walkable, providing you an easy way to get a workout in during your day. Free fitness events abound, too. At North Hills, for example, Wellness Wednesdays are sessions presented by Orange Theory that help residents get their fit on. For free!

5. Making friends is a breeze

One of the scariest parts about moving to a new city? Wondering if you’ll make any friends when you get there. That’s not something you need to worry about in Raleigh.

In July, Travel and Leisure ranked us number 8 among America’s Friendliest Cities. (Those sayings about Southern charm and hospitality? Totally true.) So go ahead, pull up a chair. We’ll be fast buddies in no time.

6. Raleigh employment rates above national average

Maybe you don’t need to hunt for a job – because one’s likely waiting for you here. Or maybe, like we discussed before, you’re totally sold on the great job market in Raleigh. Well, good news – once employment is lined up, you can feel totally secure.

There’s a reason U.S. News and World Report ranked us as tops on their list of places to live. One factor? Employment rates have been trending upwards since 2011, and have been above the national average ever since. Can’t beat that!

7. The North Carolina State Fair!

Raleigh is home to North Carolina’s annual state fair, the state’s largest annual event. The annual fair and agricultural exposition is put on by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and it’s a weekend we have bookmarked in our calendar every year.

Special rides. Delicious foods. Contests. And a homegrown music festival – it’s hard to beat this October party. And when you make Raleigh your home, you have a front-row seat to the action.

8. A vibrant Raleigh art scene

Is the culture of a city important to you when considering a move? Us, too – which is why we love that Raleigh has such a vibrant arts scene.

Broadway shows frequently tour the area, and opportunities to catch theater are numerous: locally produced shows pop up in parks throughout the city and the Carolina Ballet, North Carolina Opera and North Carolina Symphony are all located in Raleigh. Discover your next favorite painting in one of the many galleries that dot the city. Or get inspired to make one of your own.

9. We love our Hurricanes (not that kind)

We love our sports around here (just get a diehard college football fan talking to you in a bar). And Raleigh is home to the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, an Eastern Conference team that we think is poised to make some noise this year!

There’s nothing like heading to an NHL game – we love rounding up our family and/or friends for a great night out. With a young offensive core, and the talented Bill Peters as their coach, we think the Hurricanes are quickly going to become a team to watch.

10. We’re a capital of craft beer

Fancy yourself a craft beer aficionado? You’re in luck. Raleigh is essentially your heaven.

Raleigh has more than 15 percent of the state’s craft breweries, meaning that your biggest challenge might be simply checking all of the brews you want to try off your list! Adding to a vibrant hops culture is Raleigh’s music scene. With more live music venues than anywhere else in the state, it’s a one-two punch that essentially makes us the capital of craft beer.

11. Raleigh Flea Market

Some of the most fun you can have while shopping is at the Raleigh Flea Market. Those historic state fairgrounds host more than one cool event. Every Saturday and Sunday, you can hit up this huge market. Just don’t expect to leave empty-handed!

Believe it or not, there are more than 600 vendors, with findings ranging from antiques and collectibles to furniture, handmade goods, jewelry… and so much more!

12. The apartment communities are pretty great

We may be a little biased on this one, but we think some of the homes you can find in Raleigh are the best around.

Here at The Dartmouth, we’ve got clean, modern design awaiting you in your new apartment. There’s a ton of community amenities – like a concierge service, bike sharing service, community room and a pool. The apartments are beautiful, smartly designed (for example, you can find Nest thermometers here!) and an ideal home.
